Frequently asked questions
What are MonkeyHands Gel Grips?
Grip gels developed in our own lab. You apply them directly to your palm — they form a transparent layer that manages sweat and maintains friction throughout your entire session. No chalk dust, no constant reapplication, no white residue on everything you own.
Why are they better than traditional chalk?
Four clear reasons:
- Performance. One or two applications last a full 45-minute session. Chalk gets saturated the moment you sweat and creates a granular layer that, according to published research, can actually reduce your coefficient of friction.
- Health. Chalk powder is the main source of airborne particulate matter in indoor gyms. Studies record PM10 concentrations up to 90× above WHO guidelines. With prolonged use, it also strips your skin's natural oils, causing dryness, fissures, and torn calluses.
- Environment. Our ingredients are 100% lab-synthesized. Chalk comes from open-pit magnesite mines — over 21 million tonnes extracted per year according to the U.S. Geological Survey — then calcined in high-temperature kilns before reaching your bag.
- Cleanliness. The gel stays on your hand. No chalk cloud, no stains on your clothes, no exploded bag of powder in your backpack.
What's the difference between Classic, Sticky, and Gluey?
All three inhibit sweat, but at different grip intensities:
- Classic — Inhibits sweat and provides light grip. For athletes who don't need much additional grip.
- Sticky — Inhibits sweat and provides strong grip. Great for athletes who need a firm hold but still require flexibility in wrist movement.
- Gluey — Inhibits sweat and delivers maximum grip. For high-demand movements where you need every bit of friction you can get.
What are Grip Boosters? Do I need one? What's the difference between Dry and Hydro?
Boosters are companions to the Gel Grip (Classic, Sticky, or Gluey) that fine-tune your grip based on your skin's natural pH and the conditions of the moment — temperature, humidity, surface type, and sweat level. They don't replace the Gel Grip, they amplify it.
- Dry — For athletes who sweat heavily or train in humid environments. Adds an extra layer of moisture control so the Gel Grip adheres better and lasts longer.
- Hydro — For dry or damaged hands. Dry skin affects your grip and leads to skin damage like cuts and tears. Hydro moisturizes without leaving hands greasy, so the Gel Grip adheres better, lasts longer, and your skin stays protected.
Short version:
- Sweaty hands → Dry.
- Dry hands → Hydro.
- Neutral skin pH in a neutral environment → no Booster needed.
How do I know which product is right for me?
It depends mainly on your skin type and the sport you train. We built a 1-minute quiz that takes you straight to your ideal combination → Take the quiz
If you're still unsure, we recommend starting with Sticky — it's the mid-range grip intensity — or trying all three and keeping what works best for you.
How do I apply Gel Grip?
Apply a small amount to your palm, spread evenly, and let it dry for a few seconds before getting on the bar. One or two applications covers a full 45-minute session.
Is it safe for daily skin contact?
Yes. Unlike chalk — which with prolonged use strips your skin's natural oils and means breathing airborne particles every session — MonkeyHands Gel Grip is formulated specifically for prolonged skin contact, with 100% FDA-approved ingredients and none of the industrial additives that cause irritation.
